Black Boot is the new group created by Conrad Gonzalez of Brownsville, Texas; now living in the Deschutes National Forest working as a chef at a resort Lodge. The music is a lightbox telling the sad story of a love gone by. A long memory that won’t fade away with an environment so rich with tension that it itches at your soul. The music reminds us of Bonnie “Prince” Billy hanging with Neil Young on a backroad telling each other stories of their youth.

Also known as electric composer Bestia, this is the first time he’s been in a group and the first time he’s recorded a record of his original live band material. Knowing only what he thought it should sound like.

On the recordings he said “The whole process was quite Frankenstein-esque. I wrote all the songs and then found musicians I really loved, some old friends and some literal strangers I contacted over instagram, to fill in the gaps and get some outside input.”

Quick run of the players from Conrad:

“Mario Alvarado is on drums. Been playing with him since middle school and is essentially a family member to me.

Jared Flores is on bass. Fellow chef and all around incredible human. We currently work in Oregon together at the same restaurant.

Bob Cummins is on piano. Happened to see an instagram story of someone ripping up a Rhodes and had to ask if he’d play on the record.

Jon Catfish Delorme is on pedal steel. Absolute monster of a musician I found through Cactus Lee, one of my favorite Austin bands.

And I must mention Kelly Ahrens, who did all the design work.
Was a huge fan of her clothing and knew she would be perfect for the task.”

“My influences for this project in particular were True Widow, Jason Molina, Neil Young and Nirvana. Nothing “cool” or esoteric. Just the music in my life I have never gotten tired of. I’ve always wanted to start a band like this. Never gave it a shot or had even song written/sang before this. Got a fender tele and a bassman and got after it. I used to engineer a good amount when I lived in the RGV and have always had some version of a recording rig around. Really adore everything about that process. I record and mixed the record in my Austin apartment. Wasn’t pretty but made it work.”

We think he’s stumbled across a sound that is altogether timeless and bringing something absolutely beautiful to the world.
